Exhibition Symposium:
What's at Stake? New Topographics: Photography and the Man-Altered Landscape

This program investigates the issue of restaging the groundbreaking 1975 exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man Altered Landscape with regard to curatorial practice, urbanism, environmentalism, and architecture. Speakers include Matthew Coolidge, Douglas Crimp, Norman Klein, Philipp Kaiser, Richard Meyer, Christopher Hawthorne, and LACMA curators Britt Salvesen and Edward Robinson. The symposium will be followed by a special preview screening presented by James Venturi of an excerpt from Learning from Bob and Denise, a documentary about his parents, architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

This event is organized by the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and is make possible by the Ralph M. Parsons Fund and through a collaboration with The Contemporary Project at USC. The Contemporary Project is a multiyear initiative to create new forms of dialogue between the academic community and the art world.

From the Wild West to Wilshire: One Hundred Years of LACMA

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art was born of a wild west craze for land and nurtured by civic leaders whose only cultural capital was big-city dreams. In this presentation, Los Angeles-based scholar and writer Karen Lansky will reveal untold chapters from Los Angeles history.

The Art of Wine and Food: Spain in the Time of Luis Meléndez
Wednesday, November 18 | 7:00 pm
This evening of food and wine features a buffet inspired by the still lifes of Luis Meléndez, which were commissioned to show off the abundant food produced in eighteenth-century Spain. Wine historian Barbara Baxter of Planet Wine will discuss the rich selection of Spanish wine. The evening begins with an overview of the exhibition. The galleries will be open for private viewing of the exhibition Luis Meléndez: Master of the Spanish Still Life.

Masters of Architecture Lecture Series: Peter Zumthor

LACMA and the American Institute of Architects/Los Angeles
In naming Peter Zumthor the 2009 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate, the jury noted that "All of Peter Zumthor's buildings have a strong, timeless presence.  He has a rare talent of combining clear and rigorous thought with a truly poetic dimension, resulting in works that never cease to inspire." The son of a cabinet-maker who apprenticed to a carpenter before studying in Switzerland and New York, Zumthor began his career as an architect working for the Department of Preservation of Monuments of Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.  He established his own practice in 1979 in Haldenstein, Switzerland. Zumthor is a professor at the Academy of Architecture Università della Svizzera Italiana, Mendrisio and has been a visiting professor at the University of Southern California and SCI-ARC, the Technische Universität in Munich, and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.  Among his many awards are the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association (2008), the Carlsberg Architecture Prize (1998), the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture (1999), and the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2008). His works include the Thermal Baths in Vals, Switzerland; the Field Chapel to Saint Nikolaus von der Flüe near Cologne, Germany; the Kolumba Museum in Cologne; Protective Housing for Roman Excavations, Chur, Graubünden, Switzerland; Saint Benedict Chapel, Sumvitg, Graubünden, Switzerland; Homes for Senior Citizens, Chur, Masans, Graubünden, Switzerland; Spittelhof Estate, Biel-Benken, Baselland, Switzerland; and Kunsthaus Bregenz, Vorarlgerger, Landesgalerie, Breganz, Austria.

Special Exhibition Lecture: The Remarkable Tale of the Ardabil Carpets

The spectacular Ardabil Carpet, on view beginning November 14, is exhibited only rarely due to its size and sensitivity to light. Renowned carpet expert Dr. Jon Thompson, University of Oxford, speaks about the history of LACMA's Ardabil Carpet and its mate, which is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
