Children's art classes emphasize creative problem-solving and experimentation with a variety of media. In addition to art-making, classes include gallery activities and the viewing of original works of art from the museum's permanent collection or special exhibitions. Enrollment for each class is limited; registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.


Children Ages 3 1/2 to 5 and Their Family Members
These sessions offer very young children and their parents a variety of experiences, including storytelling, observation activities, and art-making workshops.

Meet the Shapes
Five Saturdays: January 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14 | 11 am–12 pm
Young artists and their family members start by exploring the great line that leads to creating all shapes! In the museum's galleries students will look together to identify and discuss how artists use lines, circles, squares, and rectangles. Back in the studio, students will incorporate new and familiar shapes in their drawings, paintings, and collages.
NexGen members plus one adult $130, $50 per additional family member; nonmembers plus one adult $140, $55 per additional family member

Children Ages 6 to 9
Inspired by the museum’s incredible collection, students discover their own creativity and problem-solving skills to produce original works of art.

Collecting the Incredible
Five Sundays: January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15 | 11 am–1 pm
Discover the incredible armor, ancient vases, and fancy furniture that filled William Randolph Hearst's many homes and castles. In the studio, create your own mixed-media masterpieces to decorate your home. With artist Irina Contreras.
NexGen members $100; nonmembers $110

Portraits: Images, Stories & Characters
Five Sundays: November 2, 9, 16, 23, December 7 | 11 am–1 pm SOLD OUT
Journey through the museum to discover delightful works of art inspired by the likeness of a person. Back in the studio, incorporate a variety of media including drawing, painting, prints, photographs, and sculpture in your own portraits. With artist Irene Prestinari.
NexGen members $100; nonmembers $110
Art materials and parking fees included in tuition; limited enrollment.


Children Ages 10 to 13
Participants study art objects in the galleries while working in a variety of expressive media. The classes emphasize creative problem-solving, observation skills, and art-making techniques.

Artists of Tomorrow
Five Sundays: January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15 | 1:30–3:30 pm
Explore contemporary and modern art, and learn how artists express themselves through art. Experience the freedom of the studio to create innovative art and express ideas, future dreams, and fantasies. Experiment with sculpture, painting, collage, and drawing using a variety of materials. With artist Cindy Bravo.

Self-Portraits
Five Sundays: November 2, 9, 16, 23, December 7 | 1:30–3:30 pm
Inspired by the exhibition Francis Alÿs: Fabiola and works in the permanent collection, students will create two- and three-dimensional self-portraits and examine how an artist can use the same subject matter in many different ways.  Experiment with paper-maché sculpture, painting, and printmaking. With artist May Jong.

Intergenerational Classes

Perfect for families or adults on their own, intergenerational classes present to students of nearly all ages the opportunity to learn about art and make art at the museum together.

One-Day Family Workshop: Latin America
Saturday, January 31 or February 14 | 2–3:30 pm
Join museum educator and chef Maite Gomez-Rejon to explore all five senses while traveling through the pre-Columbian and Latin American art galleries. Back in the studio make and decorate clay vessels while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate inspired by the conversations in the galleries.
NexGen members plus one adult $40; nonmembers plus one adult $50

Obsessions and Expressions
Five Saturdays: November 1, 8, 15, 22, December 6 | 2–4 pm Explore five distinctly different works of art to discover the obsessions and expressions of the artists who made them. Respond to these ideas through creative studio projects and class discussions. With artist June Edmonds.
NexGen members plus one adult $160, $50 per additional family member; nonmembers plus one adult $170, $55 per additional family member
